Is a Professional Skin Care Product Line Right for You?
![]() |
There are many different professional skin care product lines available these days, offered everywhere from department stores to dermatologist offices. Because these product lines can be more expensive than your average drugstore beauty products are, it's important to choose the best one for you without a lot of costly trial and error. This can be done by first determining your skin type.
Many people who go with professional products over less expensive drugstore products are those suffering from a problematic skin type such as dry, oily, combination or sensitive. Dry skin is often tight and can have flaky patches. In contrast, oily skin is recognized by the excessive level of shine and often the acne that comes along with it. Combination skin is both dry and oily, usually with oiliness on the forehead, nose and chin and dryness in other areas of the face. This can be a frustrating skin type to manage but many of today's products do a good job. Another common skin type is sensitive. Sensitive skin can be dry, oily or even normal. For sensitive skin, it's important to choose hypo-allergenic products that are gentle and free from irritants like fragrances and other harsh ingredients.
Once you figure out what kind of skin you have, all that's left to do is select a product line that is made for your particular skin type. If you find more than one product line you're interested in and don't know which to choose, turning to consumer reviews can be very helpful. With a simple search engine query about the products you're considering, you can locate reviews and ratings from previous users on a variety of different web sites. Or, you can ask a dermatologist for recommendations if you want a professional opinion.
Some people wonder how professional skin care product lines differ from other skin care products. For one, they are made and used by professionals in skin care such as dermatologists, estheticians and even makeup artists. Examples of product lines that could be considered professional in nature include Dermalogica, Murad, Kiehls and Sonya Dakar, to name just a few. Outside of the dermatologists' office, you can find products such as these at department stores and stores like Sephora.
